چکیده

Cooling down time measurements carried out at LEAR with 4.2 MeV/nucleon Pb ions and various combinations of lattice functions led to unexpected results. Notably, a finite dispersion was found to decrease strongly the horizontal cooling down times. Furthermore, intermediate betatron functions yielded shorter cooling down times than large ones and an increase of the cooler length by a factor 2 did not lead to the expected increase in the cooling rate. The aim of this report is to explain, at least qualitatively, the experimental observations. Presented at COOL03 International Workshop on Beam Cooling and Related Topics May 19 23, 2003 Hotel Mt. Fuji , Lake Yamanaka, Japan 079

A benchmarking experiment with a high intensity bunched beam stored for 1.2 s in a nonlinear lattice has been performed at the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS). Beam emittance and beam intensity have been measured for several working points at different distances from a lattice-induced resonance. We found a regime of emittance growth for machine tunes far from the resonance and a regime of emittanc...

The production of light noble gas radioisotopes with high ionization potentials has been hampered by modest ionization efficiencies for standard plasma ion-sources. However, the decay losses are minimal as the lingering time of light noble gases within plasma ion-sources is negligible when compared to its diffusion out of the target material. Previous singly charged ECRIS have shown a higher ef...

We present simulation work performed at CERN and collaborating institutes concerning the muon front-end of a neutrino factory and a possible muon cooling experiment. The front-end in the CERN scheme of a neutrino factory has been revised, eliminating the 44 MHz cavities and starting directly with 88 MHz. Two options for a muon cooling experiment have been studied, one based on the 88 MHz CERN c...

The cooling channel of the CERN reference scenario [1] for a possible neutrino factory [2] requires an approximately 200 m long lattice, which provides solenoidal magnetic fields plus longitudinal electric fields at the same time. The electric real estate field gradient along the structure shall be 2 MV/m at 44 MHz, or 4 MV/m at 88 MHz, respectively. The CERN approach incorporates the solenoids...
